Loud Revving sound

Loud Revving sound
I have a 2006 XC90 AWD. I have an issue with a loud revving sound while driving, city and Highway and at any speed. It sounds like when you are driving a stick shift and it is time to shift gears.
I see on the tachometer that it is shifting and have even put it in manual to do myself and nothing changes. It is very annoying and want to get rid of it. The vehicle runs perfect, just the sound is overbearing at times.

could the exhaust be rotted out? exhuast manifold in one peice not cracked or anything?
