This is a bit of a cross-post from the new member introductions thread; figured I'd throw it here too in case anyone else is looking for some brake info in the future...
In trying to figure out which brakes came installed on my 2011 3.2AWD, I did a little digging and found this guy's video; he does a pretty good job of explaining how to tell which rotors / calipers you have;
-Basically just by looking at the type of retainer clip. (Image attached.) He’s a little unclear at the beginning when he says the rotor size is the same for all three; I think he meant to say the rotor hat is the same size.
I found I do have the 328mm rotors and calipers, as evidenced by the anti-rattle clip which matches the one in the middle of the above image.
Ordered from FCP Euro most of the parts on Tuesday, these were delivered today... (Nice thing about living near Boston is the FCP orders arrive faster than estimated. ) Hope to get the fronts done tomorrow. Rear calipers are delayed a bit, plus I realized yesterday that I forgot to order the rear rotors, so those will have to wait until next weekend.
Also worth noting that the front rotors do not have a set screw. They're held on to the hub with what looks like just a bolt and large washer. I'll try to remember to take a pic when I'm doing them tomorrow.
2/21/23 edit:
Correction; nothing holds the front rotor in place..no set screw. The bolt in the center holds the hub in place. Pretty small bolt, actually...Surprised that's the only thing holding it in place. Most cars I've seen have a much larger nut.
I forgot to take a photo of the front, but this pic of the right rear shows the bolt and washer in the center of the hub... It's the same on the front.
Pretty much any DOT 4 fluid can be used. Owner's manual on my 2011 says DOT 4+, which means at least DOT 4 or DOT 5.1. I used Prestone synthetic DOT 4 fluid last weekend for a full flush.
So I replaced almost everything last weekend; rear calipers, rotors & pads, LF caliper, rotor & pads, and RF rotor & pads... RF caliper was just replaced last year and was in good condition. Also replaced the front hoses, but the rears I just couldn't remove because of a stuck hard line. I was able to crack the flare nut free of the flex line, but the hard line turned with it... Tried soaking in Kroil penetrating lube for a day and a half, and briefly applied heat to the nut, but the hard line kept turning with the flare nut. Funny thing is; the hard line isn't rusted at all. The nut is probably frozen to the hard line where it meets the flex line. Installing the rear calipers was difficult because the flex hose couldn't turn so I had to rotate the caliper around the hose end to screw it in. Unfortunately the hose didn't thread to the same depth as the old caliper, so I had to rotate the caliper a tad more which is putting some stress on the hose. Not comfortable leaving it like that so I'm tracking down the hard lines. I think they are #1 and #2 in the first image. Web price is around $70 each so I'm trying to find a less expensive source. Hopefully the hard line/ flare nut where it meets the coupler further up the chassis isn't frozen too. I suppose I should check that first. Second image is my right rear hard line where it meets the flex hose at the bracket.
Can someone confirm Volvos use the European M10 x 1mm bubble flare (AKA ISO/DIN) brake line nuts with 3/16" / 4.75mm lines?
I stopped by my local Volvo dealer and asked the parts department for the left and right rear brake lines and the tech said they are "indefinitely backordered."
So I guess if I want to do this I'm going to need to bend and flare the lines myself... Been researching flaring tools and lines/nuts; just need confirmation on the type of flare nut so I can buy the right one.
