I just got a 2008 xc 90 and i am wondering where the oil filter is ? I think it is to the left passinger side . maybe its a cartrige and I just dont see it . thanx for any help you can give.

 

Hi and welcome to the forum.

My understanding is that the filter is a cartridge type, and so look for the housing. I haven't done the oil change myself yet so I can't give you specifics on where exactly to locate it. When you order or buy the replacement cartridge, get the replacement crush ring to have on hand as well. It can be reused a couple of times (ref. others comments to me) but if it happens to get damaged you'll want the replacement on hand.

One of the earlier posts either here or in General Volvo chat had an extensive writeup on how to change the oil and filter on the six cylinder, and if you search back that thread will help you as well.

Our 2.5 filter cannot be seen without removing a plastic "skidplate" or "gaurd" that covers much of what can be seen from underneath. There are several hex bolts that are easily removed so that that it can be dropped, (very easy). Once removed you will see the oil pan and cartraigde filter. The filter housing on the 2.5 is a special size, 16 flute I think. I had to order it on-line, they range $5-25.

thanx it will be a while before i have to change the oil. The dealer does the first one for free then its up to me . I was just curious on where it was .I have the 3.2 ltr.

 

on my LR2 (same engine) the oil filter is in the front of the engine, onpass. side, access is from under the hood-look for a black plastic cylinder somewhere behind and below pass. headlight.
