Over filling the I6 w/dead dinos
So I'm new to Volvo care and feeding, but my long held understanding is that it's generally not a good practice to over fill your crank case w/oil.
I'm on day 5 of my stewardship of a decent (fingers crossed) '07 XC90. According to the CarFax the last owner included an oil change prior to putting it up for sale two weeks ago. So on Day three I start to poke around under the hood and in the process... checked the oil. Engine was cold and the level on the dip was about 0.4" above the max line.
I checked into the local dealer's parts desk to se if I had the correct stick. I did. The manual indicates 7.7 qts capacity.
Two questions:
1. In the 5 days I've had the "truck", 450 of the 580 miles put on it since purchase came at highway speeds; 60-75. Should I continue to "burn it off" or drop a pint and refill to mark?
B. Do you suspect the shop who performed the oil change just put 8 quarts in and called it good? It likely wasn't a "Volvo aware" establishment.
Thanks, carry on.

You're good. There were a couple of different variations on the dipsticks that actually allowed for 7.7, 8.0 and 8.4(?) qts regardless, a little overfill won't hurt. I have been doing straight 8 qts for about 150k on my 08 3.2 with no issue.
Thanks for that bit, Mass'. I was hoping there wouldn't be any Volvo "uniqueness" about this leading to something else, like oil in the tranny... Ha, ha, ha, ha... ha.... ha.... (goes off to research 'oil in transmission')
