Default Oxygen sensors XC90, 2004, 2.5L

The dealership told me the oxygen sensors had to be replaced - both the front and back ?! They price including parts + labor is about 1,100 CAD.

Is it hard to do it yourself ? I can find the sensors for fraction of that price.

Another strange thing is that according them this is the reason for the "Check Engine" light went on. But how come both sensors are dead at the same time?!

The lamp should turn on when only one of them is broken. At least this is what one would think.

What do you think?

Default Ripoff

Some update...

I found a guy with a error reading device. He confirmed the front oxygen sensor is defective and needs to be replaced. The back sensor is fine though. He run some tests and the reading is between the min and max. According him a replacement sensor can be bought online for $90. I checked myself and found the part for $150 without searching too much.

Why the heck the dealership asks for $550 per sensor and why they told me I need both sensors replaced?!! This is total ripoff. How I can trust these guys again? Is there anything I can do to stop this bad practice and to make them think before trying to rob their customers? Is there any institution that is in control of the dealerships and can penalize them for bad practices? I am in Canada?

Default O2 Sensor

Why have you not checked at your local auto parts store? $90 up stream O2 and $155 down stream direct replacements. As for installing them it takes 30 min foir both.

I did check with the local store. They did not have it. They had a universal one that you need to do the wiring. I am in Canada, we do not have so many stores and the variety that they have in USA.

I friend of mine order the OEM Bosh sensor from USA and replaced for me. The part + the money for his labor was fraction from what Volvo asked for. He was glad to make some money and I was glad I had the problem fixed and saved money. I bet Volvo dealership gets the same part for less than me ordering a single piece. Cannot understand what justifies charging me later 2.5 times the price they paid for the same part.
