I am in the market to buy my wife a used xc90. I am looking at anything between a 2005 - 2007 model. Living on the coast in South Carolina we do not need the all wheel drive. I've talked to my mechanic about buying this model and he has advised me to stay away from the all wheel drive and the T6 models because he sees more problems with these. What does anyone know about problems with specific year models on these cars? Also, if anyone has the 5 cylinder do you see any accelearation issues with the small engine? Thank you for your help!

 

I have a 2006 2.5T(5 cylinder turbo)
I've also heard about staying away from the T6's (<2006 i believe). The transmission on these are problematic, i think.

I'm no lead foot, so I've not had a problem with acceleration. Maybe a 8cylinder model would help in torque and acceleration. Nevertheless, I'm happy with mine. (70% city, 30% hwy: 15.5 mpg avg)

Now's the time to buy. I see '06 models with under 30K going for $16-17K (can't even buy a civic for that kinda money).

I've got a couple minor gripes about this car:
1) poor milage
2) heavy, with not great visibility (price we pay for safety...thick B pillar)
3)poor turning radius
4) goes thru tires like nobody's business

But will gladly give up the above for it's 5star safety rating, and the tank like feel when encased in it's armour.

 

Thanks for the reply! Neither of us are a leadfoot either, but I remembered my first truck was a 4-cylinder and I had problems passing other cars especially on an incline. Of course that was many years ago and I believe that engine technology has comea long way since then. Have you had any major mechanical problems with your 05? I really want something that is reliable for her to drive to and from school everyday. Thanks again!

 

I own a 2004 T6. I drive mostly highway miles and currently the car has 110K miles. My transmission just now has to be replaced at a cost of $4800.00. The car did drive great and the mileage was good. The tires got 50K on them before replacement. I loved this car but I can't justify the cost of a new trans.

btw, mine is a '06. With passing, I feel the turbo kick in, and then no problemo.
No mechanical problems. Mine is still under warranty (4yr/50Kmi), so my major mechanical issues will probably arise shortly thereafter
You may consider buying one that's still under warranty.
At 32K miles, i'm ready for my 3rd set of tires. One brake job including new rotors. that's it.

I would go with the 2007 model, preferably the V8 model. There was front tie-rod end ball joint recall up until the 2006 model.

Stay away from anything that comes with GM-built tranny.

Before spending the money ona new vehicle, make sure to test drive each model and have it inspected by a Volvo mechanic (not necessarily the dealer).
