Default Rear Clunking 20

2004 Volvo XC90 FWD; have replaced new shocks in rear, have bought new sway bar links for replacement in the rear.
After every major bump, a "clunking" comes from the rear, not located driver or passenger side but more the entire
back end. Looked at the struts, they look good. Bought iPD Volvo subframe bushings and will be replacing those as well;
and I did just replace both rear wheel bearings, could that have something to do with the noise?
Have also noticed that the tires on the passenger side are showing wear on the sidewall, so planning
on getting an alignment done, but wanting to fix any other small issues that I can prior.

are you sure its the rear suspension? Did you check the exhaust system to see if there are broken hangers etc? Did you check the rear control arm bushings/mounts? (on the 850s there is a "delta link" bushing that goes to the arm to the chassis which would fail - I suspect the XC90s would have a similar bushing). This would also explain the loss of alignment.

See the link for a diagram of the components.

I’m pretty confident it is the rear suspension as to accompany the clunking the vehicle now “sways” when going over any major bumps. I have replaced the sway bay end links, it improved the ride a little, but not a total solving of the problem. Gonna bring it in for an alignment, see if that corrects the problem. All the bushings underneath contained in the rear suspension look good, no visible cracks or crumbling in any of the bushings or compression fittings. I’ll take a look at the part you mentioned, see if there is something I may have missed, but gonna bank on the alignment fixing the issue 👍🏻
