Question Regarding Alarm system-siren

Hi all. I am new to the forum. Bought a 2006 XC90 2.5 that I love. Now, the "alarm system maintenance" message is showing on the dash and I found different threads talking about it. However some things are unclear to me.

I understand that option 1 is to go to the dealer and have the siren replaced, for like 600 bucks.
Option 2: I hear you can ask the dealer to download and update to "remove" the siren from the system. Is that so? What's the cost? (I really don't care about the alarm).

Option 3. I understand I can reset the thing by clicking the lock unlock several times. Now, that will take care of the message, but....will it deactivate the siren for good?

The only thing I noticed right away was that after I turn off the car adn walk away there is a noise coming from under the hood, alegedly the siren.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Update.

Need to know if by disabling the alarm will leave the sunroof inoperable. And also the answer to N.3 If I do the lock-unlock process to reset the message, will that disable the alarm too?

A local volvo shop is charging me 450 bucks to replace the siren or 103 dollars to disconnect it, but they warned me that disconnecting blocks the sunroof...

If you have a dealer download the alarm removal software, the sunroof works fine.

Thanks, EST6. NO luck here in Charlotte. Called both dealers in the area and they "don't know anything about a software that removes anything" $%^&* They are only interested in replacing the stupid Siren!

The advisor probably doesn't know about it. But there is software for removing it, whether they know it or not. Runs about $200 with labor.

I would just replace the siren with a new unit. It took me about 1 1/2 hours and some wrestling with the fender skirt and security bolt, but you do the job yourself and have the peace of mind that everything will be set if you can't find a dealer who will upload the software.

Thank you, rallyr32. I just ordered a new siren for 230 bucks. A friend will let me use his dremel and drill. The only thing I need to buy now for the project is the rivets to replace the ones I will be removing.
Where can I get the rivets and how many do I need??

Yes, not looking forward at removing parts and all, but well worth the money.

Hi Gardel,

You'll need approximately 5 rivets - I removed 6 just to give myself some extra room. You may want to purchase an additional one or two more just in case something goes wrong with the rivet gun and you inadvertantly break a rivet before it fastens. It's P/N 979878 - you can find them here: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/vol...-clip-979878oe (I prefer the OEM - the PPS/Scantech ones were the ones that broke easily, OEM were fine. Either way the prices difference is <$1) You may also need the security bolt unless you plan on re-attaching the old one or have a hex bolt somewhere... P/N 986937 (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/vol...e-volvo-986937). The siren slides into a mount and the bolt simply holds it in place - it's not the only means of support for the siren by any stretch.

Best of luck!

I had the same issue with my xc90 2004 my dash alarm light flashed rapidly and then the 4 way flashers activated after a few minutes with no audible sound from the alarm and then they went out after about ten minutes or so. After reading all the posts here. I decided to check the fuse and that was the issue. I replaced it and problem solved
