Should I buy a 2016 XC90?
New guy here. I am looking at a 2016 XC90 T6 Momentum. The vehicle is for my wife and we have driven it and it seems to be in great shape. Has 80K miles on it and is really clean. Service records indicate all standard maintenance has been done timely. All recalls done promptly and no accidents on Carfax. Was pretty excited- then I started reading this forum 😆. So I am asking a couple of questions:
Likes/dislikes?
Issues and costs?
Maintenance ease or difficulty?
Would you buy a used XC90 again given what you know now?
We have owned Jeeps over the years and never had an issue with them but are giving our college aged son our current Grand Cherokee and the XC90 popped up as something totally different that she like for her next car. We are going to go used to keep costs down with kids in college. From a dollar standpoint we can handle normal wear/tear and maintenance along with the kind of stuff that pops up in the $2000 range for example. What I don’t want (did I mention I will have 2 in college this fall) is an unexpected $7000 issue. That said, she really loves this XC90 and we think we want to pull the trigger. So any thoughts good or bad are appreciated. Thanks from the new guy!

Couple of thoughts:
1) Check to see if the engine is on the list of those with the problematic piston rings. I believe these rings were installed beginning with 2014 engines up to some point in the 2016 factory builds.
2) Check maintenance records and compare with Volvo requirements.
3) If you intend to buy, suggest buying a CPO car from a Volvo dealer. The accompanying warranty is fairly good.
Other than the potential piston ring issue, early Sensus systems tended to be slow to start up and sluggish in operation. Subsequent model years improve its performance.
I own a factory ordered 2020 V90 Inscription T6. With the exception of a few software issues, primarily with BLIS, its run fine. Software updates fixed the issues. After 21 months and 15K+ miles of ownership, the car is mechanically sound and it's well put together. No complaints.
