Default third coolant tank overflow tube

Hello all, I have a 04 xc90 and had to change the overflow tank for the coolant. In the process I managed to break the little black elbow down in the timing belt area that comes from the third tube on the overflow tank. I noticed that on some of the xc90s that tube isn't present at all.
I would like to know what that tube is for and if it is just a vent tube, would it be ok to just plug it off. Also when I recieved the new tank, there wasn't a nipple on the tank for the tube to attach to.
The picture is one that I got on line and the black tube in the middle is what I'm talking about Thanks for the feedback. This is my first post on the forum. Hopefully the photo will come through ok

Thanks for the reply. I was afraid that was what I would get for an answer.

Dont buy a new housing unless you get one that is after market with a metal fitting in it. I replaced mine with a 1/8" swedgelock fitting reused old rubber hose with hose clamps .

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up taking the thermostat housing off and I replumbed it using a couple of little brass elbows. I drilled it out and tapped it with a 1/4 inch pipe thread. I had to use a new piece of hose up to the tank. Since I was sent the wrong tank that didn't have the third nipple for the hose, I just cut the one off of the old tank and drilled the new tank so I could epoxy it to the new tank. I know Iknow, kind of sounds like a jerry rig but it really worked pretty nice. Besides I have more time than money right now.

volvo parts are not cheap and that thermostat design sucks. I made the same repairs at home instaed of spending $180 for new housing and re-used gasket with silcone rtv and it worked out fine!

$99.28 for the thermostat housing with the gasket.
