Transmission blues - '04 XC90
Hello all..this will be my first post on here.
I recently picked up an '04 XC90 T6 for my wife with 98Kms (61,000 miles). I had it inspected before buying and everything checked out except for the timing belt. Transmission fluid was 'great' according to the well respected Volvo mechanics in Edmonton. Timing belt replaced - no problems.
2 weeks later..."TRANSMISSION SERVICE URGENT" message pops up accompanied with sporadic acceleration. I make a few calls and take it to my local Volvo dealer where they proceed to tell me the transmission fluid is "black and smells burned". Error code shows 4th gear shift problems.
Transmission is FUBAR. Not sure how things went from looking really good to a $3500 repair bill in 2 weeks but needless to say I'm a tad disappointed with my first Volvo experience.
I thought I had done my homework by researching this forum and the known issues surrounding the GM transmissions. Had the fluids checked in a pre-purchase inspection...drove it 500 kms home...no problem. Now this.
Any thoughts? Should this have been flagged in the pre-purchase inspection? Can the trans. oil go from 'great' to black with burnt smell in 2 weeks?
We love the car otherwise so hopefully the repair will be money well spent.

90,000 plus. That was a great transmission considering what happened to other. If you actually had your vehicle inspected by a Volvo mechanic then he should have had the integrity to tell you your buying a lemon. God help you and so will Volvo, for the right price.
