Default Transmission repair or replace

I own a 2004 XC90 6 cyl. AWD with 110000 miles on it. My transmission message came on stating: Transmission Problem, Urgent! I took it to a Volvo dealer who checked it (TCM-002B Gear 4 Incorrect gear ratio) and said I would need to replace the transmission. $4500 plus. I called a Volvo mechanic who said he could fix the problem. The dealer said that they don't take transmissions apart. It would have to be replaces. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you very much. EAS1

First of all, I would like to let you know that I have edited your post, because it had several lines of what seemed like a browser info (fast fast fast Internet Explorer 4, language blah blah blah).

If you are not experiencing actual trouble, chances are that the dealer may be trying to rip you off. Some shops, once they figure out a customer does not possess much knowledge on his/her car, try to rip him/her off.

I would take it to another mechanic who said he/she can repair it. Please note, however, that the automatic transmissions on Volvos are generally not recommended for overhaul as par the mfgs suggestion.

If your tranny is GM-built, you are lucky that it lasted over 100,000 miles.

I hope this is of some use.

My pleasure, I hope the problem is minor.

If it is only the warning on the dash and the tranny is functioning as it should, I would drive it as is. If, however, the tranny acts up and your safety is jeopardised, hit the shifter to "N";you do not have to press the button on the shifter to go from D or R to N; just knock it into N.

The "incorrect gear ratio" code could be caused by incorrect tire wear. We got the code 7 months ago when we really, really needed new tires. The Dealer told us we needed a new transmission. The indy shop told us to get new tires. New tires and 7 months later the transmission is still going. Just for safe measure we have started a transmission repair fund though!

Get a second opinion. Hope for the best, but prepare of the worst.
