Two lights on - intermittent (ANTI-SKID OFF, TIRE PRESS SYST.)
Hi there,
My 10yr old XC90 -- despite low mileage of just crossing 60K miles -- is starting to show sign of old age. Coming out of the pandemic, I lately commute to work in it. Two warning lights come on and off which is very annoying:
1. ANTI-SKID OFF / SERVICE REQUIRED - It usually starts to come on when I turn left in a certain way (which I haven't grasped any pattern). Sometimes turning right in certain ways (which I haven't grasped a pattern) would clear it but not always. After a while (say 20min - 1hr), it would automatically clear up. My dealer says probably not urgent since we are on very flat land on the sunny west coast. They charge $240 for diagnostic and estimate the repair to be around $800 (not knowing exactly what's wrong).
2. TIRE PRESS SYST. / SERVICE REQUIRED - In the beginning, I had a nail in the tire and thanks to the TPMS, I noticed and got the tire patched at Costco for free. Very soon though, this light came on. It would stay on for usually a day or two before it goes away. Then it would come back again. I have searched on the internet but no clear conclusion. Without a working TPMS, I won't notice a nail in the tire next time.
Outside of two issues, XC90 runs great -- smooth and quiet. Wanted to hear whether any of you have run into the same/similar issues. If so, how did you have it fixed? And roughly how much is the repair cost?
Thanks in advance!

Does your TPMS have a reset button? (check the owners manual). Assuming you have metal valve stems, you have an in-wheel sensing unit that transmits the pressure data. Intermittant or false alarms can be due to that sending unit or due to the receiver. Any issues with using the key fob?
Anti-skid issues can be one of a few things - a speed sensor (each wheel has one), a yaw sensor, clock spring (to show where the steering wheel is) etc. You'd need to know the fault codes to see what they are suggesting. Did the dealer do a scan yet or just give you a ball park on costs over the phone?

Thank you MT for the reply!
2. You could (but not likely) have a bad tpms wheel sensor. Most tire stores have a hand held tool that when placed near each wheel sensor can determine if it is working or not. If all are working - there could be a problem with the antenna that picks up those signals. Again first step - scan the entire car with a compatible scan tool.
