Volvo is performing euthanasia on its popular sport-utility, the XC90.
I was ready to purchase a 2008 XC 90 but then i read this on cnn.com. Any thoughts?
NEW YORK (Fortune) -- Never easy, the automobile business has gotten exponentially more difficult in recent months, as manufacturers rewrite their new model plans to cope with the eventual tightening of fuel economy standards.
The latest victim is Volvo. According to a report in a Swedish auto magazine, Volvo is performing euthanasia on its popular sport-utility, the XC90. A revamped XC90 that was due to hit the market in 2010 has been cancelled because Volvo had no hybrid powertrain to put in it. For a brand that aspires to greenness as Volvo does, such an absence could be highly damaging to its environmental image. So after a facelift that will keep it on the market until 2012, the popular and highly-profitable XC90 will go wheels-up.
Although Volvo denied any plans to kill the XC90, it wouldn't be the first SUV headed off to the automotive graveyard.

Man that sucks. I was probably going to run my Tahoe til it fell apart and then look into the XC 90. I guess I better take care of it a little bit better.
I've read reports on the Internet (take it for what that's worth) that Volvo responded to Motor Sports Sweden denying that it waskilling off the XC90. The report indicated that the next generation Volvo will be built on a Ford platform that hasn't yet been identified and that change may delay introduction of next gen XC90.
I think you will see the XC90 around for awhile, although they will be releasing their smaller SUV this September/October the XC60 - which I have already planned to order. The XC90 is a great vehicle, I am on my third one - the only thing that could screw things up would be the parent company FORD - hopefully they will sell Volvo soon to maintain the integrity of Volvo
