Default XC90- Oil Pump clogged?

My 2005 XC90- V8 has a low oil warning, took it to the shop. They checked the oil level, which was fine , they suggested that it was the oil pump and it might be clogged or need to be replaced?

How do you check the oil pump to see if it is clogged or needs to be replaced?

Also could it be that the pressure sensor needs to be replaced? If so How do you replace the sensor?

Thanks

low oil level and low oil pressure are completely different things. what did the warning say? probably level. pump has nothing to do with level. i'd guess the low level sensor in the dipstick tube is faulty.

I own a 06 xc90 with the 2.5l turbo engine with 112k mi. and had a similar problem. Had todrop the oil pan and clean out the sludge. Seems the POdidn’t change the oil soon enough or was using regular oil and running to longbetween oil changes. Anyway dropped the pan and clean the pump pick up tube andpan and what ever else we could reach, put it all back together and ran engineflush for 30 min at idle, drained oil, changed oil filter and filled up with10-40 Mobil 1 full synthetic. Engine runs like new. Next is timing belt and oiltrap replacement. If you change the oil often and use good synthetic oil theseengines (the 5 cylinder turbos) will run for a long time. My 2 cents.

Hi,

What was your car symptom before cleaning the sludge out of the pan?
My XC90 has a lower oil pressure at +4k rpm and good pressure at idle. But high pressure in crankcase itself.

So it is more likely a sludge issue that I am having.

If you have high crankcase pressure (which does not refer to oil pressure), sludge is your problem. The oil trap is clogged and likely the oil pan as well.

Low oil pressure at first. Not enough to set offand warning but just enough to give an error on the cam timing hyd. adjusters.(cant remember the correct name so will just call them adjusters). They run onoil pressure for the advance and retard timing. Just thought they were goingbad and would replace them at some point. One day on the highway I floored itto pass and noticed the low oil pressure warning message on so pulled over tosee what's up. Well that's when I had my wrench pull the pan and noticed thesludge. Not a lot but just enough to clog the pickup and when that happened, the o-ring failed on the pickup channel in the pan. Cleaned the pan replacedthe seals in the pan and flushed the engine and all is well. No problems now. Iblame the sludge on the previous owner using non syn. oil and going too longbetween oil changes. Not really the owners fault though as they only did the7500 oil change interval as per the Volvo dealer. Now I only run syn.
