1993 240 oil sump drain appears clogged - clearing without replacing
I am in the process of replacing some of the PCV system in my 240. Once I removed the oil sump, I noticed that the small hole with the rubber flange seal on the block is clogged about 1 inch down the tube. According to diagrams, this is the oil return tube. Everything I read on forums about this says "DO NOT TOUCH!" and "DON'T MESS WITH THIS!".
I look at the diagrams () and it looks like a simple tube installed from the top (since the flange is on the top), but everything I read says that it's installed from under the engine and require oil pan removal. What is correct?
What I really want to know is what is my best chance of cleaning this without removal? If I stick a small screwdriver or drill bit down here will I dislodge the tube? or would I have to pull the flange down with it to dislodge it.
I'm open to suggestions that don't involve dropping the pan (but I will if i have to)...
Thanks!
Chris

Well, it seemed to work...
I was gentle with a small drill bit then moved up in size until I got to a 3/8" spade bit... The it was still clogged so I sprayed some PB blaster in the hole and let it sit for a while. A little gentle stirring and prodding with a coathangar and I broke through the clog... Put everything back together and she started right up. Now to change the oil.
It can be done!
Next time I have the pan off I'll change this tube. I'm sure I left some gunk in it.
