I am looking at two 2008 XC90s. One has an inline 6 and the other a V8. Both have around 100,000 miles.

My concern is the transmissions. I have read online that the transmission problems are common. I am also old enough to know that the Internet is full of information, some true and mostly false. Do XC90s have widespread transmission problems? If I buy one of these vehicles, will I be replacing there transmissions?

Second, I believe the V8 uses a timing chain. Is this correct? Does the I6 use a timing belt?

most of the issues with the AWD transmissions were from the early 00s - pre 2004. the 2008s don't share the same model transmissions so that's not a widespread problem area. Yes the V8 uses a timing chain and the I6 and T5s use timing belts. With that said you should still have a professional inspection done and see if the seller has a full maintenance history before buying any used car.
