1990 240DL Stalls in reverse
Hi all,
I am going crazy here.
I replaced the rear-end on my cute little 240 that I bought for $1. She was running like a dream. Then suddenly, she started stalling everytime I put it in reverse. EVERYTIME. Like, I cannot back up because it dies.
Anyone know what's up??? I am frustrated!!!

How does it idle in forward gear or neutral? I don't know that its reverse related and maybe just bad idle altogether and that little hesitation/load you get when dropping it in reverse causes it to stall. Typical idle problems are the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) and related is the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) that needs to be functioning for the IACV to work. Of course it could be many things like ignition, air/fuel delivery, AMM (Air Mass Meter), vacuum leaks, etc, etc. You need to start testing things one-by-one and ruling them out. Its best to start with a fresh tune-up (cap, rotor, plugs, and I like to do wires too) to set your baseline. I'd do a compression test at that point too, while the plugs are out, to make sure you're not throwing good money at a serious problem--Not likely, but its piece of mind to know you've got solid engine internals.
