High pitch noise and possible overheat?
OK, bear with me. This past spring took a ride with the top down...needed the air-freedom from all the crazy things going on in the world! Car is running and doing great. but, I get into the next township and this high pitch noise starts while driving. if I play with the gas pedal ...more gas more high pitch. So I bring it home. In the driveway I open the hood and the motor to me seems "hot". I went in and double checked the heat gauge in the car...it says it's normal(in the middle) not up top in the red over heat area. OK, I scratch my head, let it cool down, next day take it for spin, about same amount of miles...same thing happens. Bring it home and open hood, seems to seem "hot"...I noticed that front fan was not on. OK...so I look up what a new thermostat and sensor is...they've never been replaced ...so ok not much money, I replace them. Take out for ride...same amount of miles....again same issue. Still no fan come on...car "seem" to be "hot" OK, no problem, I pick up the fan relay set up, easy in the front to replace, no problem and not cost much...ok...another spin I take..again same issue!??????? I just happen to squeeze the top hose that goes into the thermostat housing...see if it was for sure antifreeze and not air trapped...I can see in the reservor over flow that I'm moving it around...I then play with small hose that goes in near the sensor in the housing and that "tricks" the sensor to become VERY hot...and the fan comes on!! So I figure this car might just seem hot ...but not really and not hot enough to set off the sensor to kick the fan on. So I moved away from that. I then thought perhaps I have a partially plugged CAT.
I take off the shield in the back to find the 3 bolts so I can drop the CAT and shine light through honey comb..to rule that out...well...I find that the Turbo Wastegate looks stuck and the actuator where the vacuum hose is attached is split and all rusted to hell with pin holes.. I watch great Video on Ytube and I check the turbo out, I for sure need a good hose and new actuator...no problem...so I thought..well U can NOT get a new actuator for this particular unit...unless U buy a whole new Turbo. All the other hoses looked like they could use a replacement...all is original ...so...In goes a new turbo and hoses and solenoid. So anyhoots....I figure out that my CAT is fine and now the new Turbo is all up to code. I take it for a spin....Car runs and drives great and great pick up(she freakin' really moves!) but.....but...again after the same amount of miles....that damn high pitch noise come back. I come back home and take off the powersteering fill cap...the fluid looks to be boiling!? Now this got me thinking! The first thing that came to my mind, is when the first owner had the Timing belt changed, they put on a new water pump...but the kind that falls apart and fails??? or.....wheelbearings are heating up and making the rack and pinion work hard..that's why it takes driving the car a few miles to get the symptoms to start??? I luv this car, I do not have a problem with giving it the parts it needed as mentioned above. However, now I'd kinda like to narrow this down a bit. replacing Timing belt,(mainly to do the water pump) rack and pinion ..wheel bearings...That's all a pretty big ticket. Is there anyway for me to narrow down this issue and what it is? I've checked the oil...it's very clean and is oil only. I've checked the antifreeze...it's got NO oil in it...the tail pipe is clean! no white or blue smoke. Am I missing something else that's a possible? What about the Turbo air intake tubes? They seem firm? Not sucking themselves in?? What am I missing here? It feels like it's on the tip of my tongue and I'm just scrambled in the head! LOL. Are there "checks" that I can do...ie...water pump...turbo air tubes...that might help expose what the real culprit is ?
I'm sorry that was long...but want you all to see where i've been and gone. In advance appreciate any thoughts, idea's. Ohh and this really makes it interesting...I have NO codes...NO service engine codes!! Ohh, and when I had the CAT off for inspection...I replaced both Oxy sensors just cuz I was there! Remember...this car has to be driven about 12 miles before any of the high pitch noise stuff starts...something keeps yellin' in the back of my head water pump! water pump!????

I'd start by sorting out the source of the noise. 1) does it make the noise when standing still and in neutral? if so that rules out axles, wheel bearings etc. 2) Does the noise happen when you hold a steady RPM or only when in gear under load (ie accelerating in gear). 3) if it happens in neutral when parked, listen around with a hose or mechanics stethescope to the various drive belt accessories - AC, alternator, PS pump, serpentine idlers. If you remove the timing belt cover, does the sound change?
I had it running today in yard for a good half hour in park. It sounded normal and when stepped on the gas it did not make the high whine sound. It seems the car has to be driven some distance for it to start it's cryin'....??? My lady has great ears and has pin pointed where sounds come from in the past with many other vehicles...this has us both in mystery. Due to sounds are normal for the first start up..and first 6 or so miles...it's something like tires..bearings ..rack an pinion...I remember a Dodge Caravan rack and pinion making a similar sound...but was able to pin point it to that due to the steering wheel would vibrate...so again...at a bit of a loss here? And would a faulty R&P make other things run "hot"? Radiator has to cool the Power steering fluid right? an issue there? Wife's Jimmy had wheel bearing issues, we where able to isolate the sound there too... The car about 6 months before all this had brake job and struts and shocks and front alignment ...but did not do this in those past months..?? So what changed? What is "warming" up on the road when traveling...to start to make this sound? umm...??
