Hi,
I'd like to enhance the stock headlights on my 99 V70. I have read numerous posts about HID. I'd prefer to stay with the stock beams. Are there any tips on the brightest bulb? Does cleaning or replacing the lenses help substantially? What about the reflectors?
Coming into winter months and darker driving hours. Any tips are most appreciated!
The most common problem with these lamps is actually the mirror flaking off the reflector. If your headlights have the typical problems, then you must address that mirror, even if you don't want to. It is critical to get light out of the headlamp that it bounce off that parabolic mirror.
Now, your lenses might be yellow or otherwise ugly, but you can see that. Bulb brightness is a pretty minor consideration. it is what it is. New ones might look a lot better even at the same wattage.
I picked up a couple of new made-in-taiwan lamps in the junkyard this year, and they were an improvement over my home-made upgraded reflectors. Quality-wise, they seem good, but I don't know how long they'll stay good.
I had investigated all the methods people use to fix reflectors, and I eventually stuck little squares of "monokote chrome" decal material all over the inside of the lamps. $4 worth is enough to do a car. Tedious, but pretty effective. Of course, you can inspect your mirrors and you may decide they are not the problem.
It is likely that the reflectors are deteriorated. Best solution that is reasonable in cost is to get new EURO specification lights. Superior optics of the lenses (over DOT specs) and new chrome on reflectors makes a HUGE difference, I bought mine from SKANDIX in Germany.
you may also be able to find the e-code lenses separately - check eBay or some Volvo friendly web stores. They just install by removing the metal clips (as seen on the pic).

New chrome on reflectors will make the biggest difference by far. Post a pic of the condition of your reflectors. I have DOT lenses available here in good shape if that's the problem. Also have loads of other parts from this 98 V60
