Need ideas on removing rear ABS sensor screw
Hi,
The driver's side ABS sensor is shot, and Im having a devil of a time removing the screw.
I'm going to replace the whole harness, both sensors on both sides, and the screw came out on the passenger side no problem. The driver's side won't budge.
I had the rotor off to replace the parking brake shoes (and the rotor) and so I decided to remove the old ABS sensor while I was in there, thinking it would give me more room to work on the screw if I busted ithe sensor out of there. No such luck: There's a brass ferule that is still on the screw after the plastic of the smashed ABS sensor came away. That ferrule prevents getting a good grip on the screw because it spins.
I've applied heat, PB Blaster, and tried using some specialty vice-pliers with jaws cut to grab screw heads. No movement.
My next idea is to remove the hub and bearing, and drill out the hole where the screw lives from the opposite side, tap the hole, and put a helicoil insert in the hole. The main question is whether the original hole for the ABS sensor screw is already all the way through. If there's no trace of where to start drilling I could end up in worse shape than before, by putting the hole in the wrong place.
Is there a clear place to drill? Or do I need a different option?
So, Is there a better option? I'm open to suggestion.
I really want the ABS on this car to function. I live in Minnesota, winter is a thing...
Thanks
