Oh nooo....
My 98 V70 manual with 150k had an oil leak on the passenger side that I figured was nbd.
$2,350...
Main crank seal, new double flywheel?, Clutch while they're in there.
Damn I thought the mechanicals on this thing would run another 150k.
I don't know what to do, cars probably not worth it is it but I was looking for a few more years of cheap comfortable miles out of her.
Suggestions? TIA

start by checking the PCV (ie rubber glove test etc) to make sure you don't have positive pressure pushing oil out the seal(s). if you wind up repairing that, mke sure to clean out the ports in the block (you can do a seafoam treatment just prior to the repair to help), next try going to a high mileage "dino" oil - (they have seal softeners which can slow leaks providing your PCV is is good shape). If that doesn't help, then its time to consider dropping the tranny to access the seal and do the clutch. Unless you are going to build the engine, I'd stick with stock clutch parts and be good for another 150K. you may be able to reuse the flywheel (a machine shop can resurface) - mostly you want a new clutch disk, pressure plate (since its springs can lose tension over time) and throw out bearing. I'd also replace the slave cylinder too.
Well, the clutch ain't on the passenger's side. I'd put a $10 seal in there and PM it and let's go another 100,000. That's still going to cost you $1000 or $1500 just for that. If you take this particular car to a mechanic and don't fix it yourself, you might be better off to sell it. Nobody needs to take a 25 year old European car to a mechanic, ever, unless you're some sort of millionaire car collector. It's just not good business. It's already 22 years old.

The $2,350 repair over "a couple more years" comes out to $100 per month.
Is the repair "worth it"? What's the cost of replacing your car? This is the question NOT "what is the car worth?".
Assuming you've taken care of your vehicle, it definitely pays to repair it yourself. Having someone YOU TRUST repair it can also be worth it but the point mentioned above is so true.
Joe Average's car has one foot in the grave everyday. Any repair can become the last straw.
