main seal
Ok... ive got a pretty good sized oil leak, when i took it in to Midas, i had them diagnose where it was from (i couldnt tell if it was the pan or what). They said it was the Main seal (rear crankshaft seal?) and that it would cost approximately $600 to fix. This is mainly because of the 8-9 hours of labor they quoted me. Im wondering has anyone done this repair, is it worth them doing it (ie if I do it, good chance of destroying something else). I have a little experience working on cars, but am wondering if spending $30 for the gasket and doing it myself would be worth it, espechially since i dont have $600 to spend on it currently. So if anyone has any pointers, it would be greatly appreciated
thanks- andy

Hi Andy,
Do you have a manual or automatic transmission? Reason I ask is because I have the 5 speed and just had a new clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, rear main seal, flywheel resurfaced, and shifter bushings all changed for $750 using all new parts, not reman stuff.
If you have an automatic transmission then perhaps someone else can chime in because I don't have any experience with those. I was going to do the clutch myself on my old 240, but not having a lift and knowing my car spent the first 10 years of its life in salt country made me a little leery of doing it on a garage floor. I have no regrets letting someone else do mine, even though it did cost about $400 in labor. Good luck and hopefully someone can help you out.
