Default V70. Weird Braking Issue, any thoughts?

1999 V70, non turbo, auto. 100,000 miles.

When braking, sometimes the brake pedal will not travel at all and with only 25% stopping power! Other times the brake pedal will travel normally but there is a pumping feeling and a slight grinding noise (and 75% stopping power). More than half the time the brakes functional normally without any concern. I ran the OBDII but no codes showed up other than the rear O2 sensor. I took it to my local corner garage and the mechanic experienced the same things on a short test drive. He said he did not know what it was, his code reader turned up nothing, and he didn’t want to spend the whole day exploring solutions and suggested I take to a Swedish car specialist in the city. I can’t get in for a week. I’m also frightened of the possible costs related to ABS module, pump, modulator. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Roy in Montreal

Well, that was simple. Turns out both front calipers were seized, as was the right rear one. Replaced all three, plus rotors, and some ceramic brake pads and is well again.
