Default Weird intermittent grinding noise when braking

Hi all! new here just got a v70 wagon with 188k miles.
When braking sometimes I hear a weird grinding noise. The brakes are new. It almost sounds like the ABS pump might be kicking in intermittently. it doesn't happen all the time.
I thought it may also be a bearing but if it were a bearing it would happen every time right?
Any ideas?

If it happens WHILE BRAKING, it's likely a brake problem. Who did the brake job? How does it feel? If the brakes are NEW NEW, it could be that you are just being over sensitive about the brakes.

No the brake pads were replaced because that's what we assumed it was. What gets me is why its intermittent.

So, my question is, do they FEEL smooth? When they were replaced, did they say they needed replaced? Who did the work? Was there a problem with a caliper? Did they replace the rotors?

ok so I went and checked it out earlier. I pulled the ABS fuse and lo and behold no more grinding! So I am guessing that something is causing the ABS pump to kick in under normal braking conditions. Possibly a bad ABS module or something.
Any thoughts? I will replace the fuse and take it for a spin later.

My 960 was doing that under hard braking (not slipping). Didn't deal with it so I'm not sure what to tell you. It could be a single sensor, loose wire, or something along those lines. Search ABS or wait for someone else to guide you from here.

I have this problem also. Took it in to dealer who couldn;t find reason. I believe it is caused by wear on the rotors. Wear leaves a rim on the edge of the rotors causing the disc pads to rub on these rims occasionally. This creates the noise as the pads scrap on these rims and wear them down a bit, so the noise stops for a while. I just replaced my pads and ground the rim off the rotors and the noise stopped.
