Default 2008 V70 - Intermittent no crank/no start

Starting about a month ago, about 25% of the that I insert my key fob in the dash and push the start button, I get dash lights but no crank, click or anything. No message on dashboard. So I eject the key, reinsert it and sometimes it starts on the second, third or fourth attempt.

I have replaced the car's battery and the battery in both of my key fobs yet the issue persists. I took it to my trusted independent Volvo shop and their diagnostics showed no faults (and of course they could not recreate the problem).

Any ideas?

Ensure battery connections are tight, clean...old school problem, maybe?

Same here XC70 2008.
I put the key in the dash;
Then I hear the steering wheel lock unlock itself.
A second later it locks again.
I eject the key.
Repeat the process, until:
I put it the key.
Then I hear the steering wheel lock unlock itself.
Nothing happens. :-) I can start the car.

Do you also hear the wheel locking mechanism switch off and on, when entering the key?
