Blew the motor in my 02 2.4 l v79. Tensioner broke off while driving motor now toast. What engines can I consider for the swap? For instance there is a 2.5 t close by but will it mesh with my current tranny? I would rather not replace the tranny as well if I don't have to.

 

where are you located? For starters check under the hood for labels or use the VIN to figure out your engine's code, ie if you have a 2002 with a 2.4L low pressure turbo, the code should be B5244T3 which was used from 2000-2003. The LPT 2.5s were used from 2003 to 2008 (B5254T2). If you are in the US, Check out Car-parts.com and you should find plenty of exact matches. Also, when you say the tensioner broke, I assume you mean the timing belt went off and you have a set of bent exhaust valves. Have you considered simply swapping in a used head? Not sure about the transmission compatibility question - these engines are all evolutionary so I doubt there'd be an issue meshing with the transmission - I'd be more concerned with changes to the mechanical parts iewhether the new engine as dual VVTs or just exhaust VVT.
