I have a 2002 V70 XC70 and the dashboard went dark. I sent in to MyAirBags.com, it came back, worked okay for a few days, and went dark again. I sent it into them again, and the same thing happened.

I am wondering whether the problem is not in the dashboard/DIM, but in the power feeding the DIM, perhaps in the cable or the connector. Here are two facts that have me puzzled:

1. When I first turn the ignition to ON, the check engine light is lit, just like what normally happens.
2. When the sun shines directly on the leds, I can dimly see the correct numbers, like the odometer.

So, is it the dashboard or the power to the dashboard?

 

What feedback did the shop you sent it to give you when it went back the 2nd time? Did they find an issue in the DIM that they corrected on the 2nd trip? The fact that you can see correct data, but it just isn't lit up leads me to believe the problem is in the DIM, not the power supply. I recently sent mine to BBA Remanufacturing and it has been perfect since I got it back 2 months ago and I have gone about 5,000 miles. BBA gives a lifetime warranty, though by the time you send it back a couple of times the warranty is worthless, so if they can't fix it right it might be time for a refund so you can send it somewhere else.
