Oil dipstick, tube and ring
I need to change these on my volvo s40 2001, dealer wants 200 dollars and parts are only 59. Can anyone tel me how to change this and how hard is it. Thanks
Auto,
When I had the car in for the Thermostat they told me I needed a new dipstick, tube and ring, I thought it was odd but I said no. I would think I could replace the lower ring and the upper ring without replacing the tube and dipstick. Looks like there is just one bolt on the tube attached to the motor, and twist out the end from the oil pan, is this correct. If I only change the 0-rings it will only cost e 3 dollars would ather do just that if possible. And by the way the dealer got me for a temperature sensor when they replaced the thermostat, cost me 300 dollars for the job in NYC here.

Hello to a fellow New Yorker.Forget about the dealer around here there is not one you can trust.First thing you should do to check the oil level it could be overfilled.Friend of mine had trouble with his car when he got the oil "replaced" at Bayridge Volvo.Morons didnt drain the old oil out but filled the full 6 quart on top of it.If the oil level is ok (checked while the engine is not running) then you have to see a bigger picture here which is why do you have oil coming out at the dipstick or why it gets blown out. When it happens the pressure in the engine builds up which could be caused by a couple of things.Worst case scenario is that the engine is in bad shape and there is an excess blow-by at the rings. Compression test could shed light on this.Less problematic if its only the catch-can cluged up which is part of the EVAP system located under the intake.Sucks to get to it and very time consuming but this is the usual suspect when the dipstick gets blown off.You can do like some does as to replace the O-ring and double it but it will not solve the problem.Dipstick doesnt get blown out for no reason.

I can vouch for the total moronathon at Bayridge volvo. My car is still under warranty can u guys reccommend a DECENT dealer in the NYC area? I love my C70, if she was a girl i would marry her; but this is my first Volvo, if this keeps up it will be my last Volvo
Does your dipstick have one o-ring or two at the top(handle end)? If it has one, Volvo updated the design and the new dipsticks now have two o-rings, thus requiring a new tube that the dipstick fits in.
I dont know how to put 2 o-ring on top of each other to make it so big it wouldnt fit only next to therefore why a new tube would be needed?Went to source a new ring from autoparts stores but no success.Desperatelly trying to avoid a visit to a dealer ended up in HomeDepot. They have a good ring collection at the foucet fixing isle. The o-ring is the #78.Go ahead if you'd like and pop on two if you wish but one would hold and if with two the stick still pops out you have to investigate the cause.
The reason they told him he needed a new tube is because Volvo updated the design of the dipstick. The design of the new dipstick will not work with the old tube, therefore, he will need the new tube if he decides to replace the dipstick.
Just trying to clarify.
