Default Just bought a 02 v70 t5 w a seized engine, what r my options.

(orlando FL) Just bought this beautiful black 2002 v70 t5 wagon w a seized engine and I just want to get her on the road w or without a turbo engine. What are my least overall costly options? The info online is very confusing as to what year engines from what cars will fit. Many claim I am supposed to have a 2.4 Liter but the sticker under my hood says 2.3 . I know it's a high pressure turbo. What are my least costly options as far as used engines go. Ideally I'd want a non-turbo w 5 speed manual but I have the automatic. Could I use a non turbo engine w-out major mods or use a non turbo block with my turbo plumbing? My vin# says engine code 53. Thanks a million for any input.

I don't know what the damage to your engine is, but depending on wether the cylinder head is in good condition, why not have the engine rebuilt?

The other routes you are describing could easily require a new wire harness and other very costly and complex modifications. Keep it simple, you'll spend less money in my opinion. In fact, if you have a totally destroyed engine I still think it will be less expensive to find a complete long block from a parts yard, etc.

Just as an example, the ECU may not be different for turbo vs. non-turbo but the tuning for these engines is world's apart.

Talk to a mechanic you trust. Good luck.

The T5 does have a HPT 2.3 for that year. From previous research, I remember reading that you can interchange turbo engines without needing to change ECUs. For best compatibility, I would stick with 2001 and 2002 engines as some parts changed for 2003 I think. These engines are widely available through ebay and through local breaker yards. Shouldn't cost much more than $800 for a working engine. As far as switching to a non-turbo and 5 speed, not sure. I know that the compression is different (higher compression on non-turbo than HPT). I don't know if ECUs are the same. Plus, that swap is a lot of work and expense that you will never ever get back when you sell it. Best advice is to find one you are happy with and buy it.

Thanks guys, found an engine in LKQ for $400, got it installed for $450 and after a few minor hiccups I am in heaven. This is a world class car and a ton of fun to drive now. Transmission was shifting really bad but after a bottle of Lucas treatment it's much better but will get it flushed soon. Idle was not good either with car surging but lil throttle cleaner and lucas fuel additive not to mention fresh fuel it's running much better. Next is plugs n possibly wires. What a car, wow !!
