2004 XC70 Hard Start in the Morning
Hi Everyone,
We have an 04 XC70 that has a rough start issue but only in the morning. Needs approx 10-15 seconds of cranking before it will start. After that it runs happily, no stuttering or power loss. The rest of the day it starts normally.
It has been doing it now for three weeks without any change in symptoms. Any idea what it could be? It doesn't have a fuel pressure regulator so no luck there. It has a fuel pressure sensor instead which if leaking would leak externally I am guessing.
I have read that there is a check valve in the fuel pump that could be the issue, but have not seen any successful follow-up. I do not really want to replace the fuel pump if unless necessary. At least not until the tank is empty!
Any insight on what it could be?
Thanks,
-William

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? Next time you try starting it in the morning turn the key to the run position and wait about 5-10 seconds before switching to the crank position. This would see if you are loosing fuel pressure.
Ok not sure how this one got derailed haha.
I tried leaving the key in the on position for 10seconds before starting, no change. So I picked up a fuel pressure tester. In the on position it goes up to about 30psi then drops down to zero in about 30-45 seconds.
Once cranked and running its at 55psi consistent. Once shut down it drops back to zero. So I am clearly losing pressure here.
I don't have a cold report since I took the car to get the tool but safe to say it would be the same in the morning
Looks like the fuel pump then? Picking one up today the job does not look bad except that it's almost a full tank!

Well that was it! Top of the fuel pump was soaked in fuel, I'm surprised the smell didnt come through to the cabin.
New pump is in and holding pressure nicely. Tomorrow morning will tell but I think its safe to say that was the problem. Not sure where it would leak from though? In the pic below you can see the fuel coming from the fuel distribution center where the plastic nipples come out of. Those are industry terms BTW

Yes. Don't "test" until after everything is put back together though.
I wanted to make sure all was well while the pump was still exposed. Didn't think about the SRS connectors in the rear seats. Looks like a trip to the dealer for a reset is going to eat into money saved on this job 🙁

There was a recall on some pumps for that. If you post your VIN, I can check. Volvo would reimburse you for the pump then if it was eligible.
Resetting the light should be free under the Volvo Service 2.0 program, which gives free diag for warning lights.
