Default 2010 XC70 differential rebuild

Has anyone done a rebuild on their differential? I have about 170,000 miles on my 2010 XC70 3.2 and it's making a horrible whining sound. My regular mechanic says it's the rear end. He says same problem is seen on Land Rovers of the same era (apparently using the same parts).

Do any of you have experience with this issue and where/how did you fix it?

Thanks,

Jon

Hey mate, BTW I just joined this forum today and came across your inquiry. I had same problem with my 2010 XC70. You are correct that Land Rover has, as many models do, the same Haldex system and differential as the Volvo does. My problem, as with most, was the Pinion gear bearing (actually there are two). I like almost everyone do not have the facilities to remove the subframe in order to remove and rebuild the diff. I found a shop that was familiar with the Land Rover and in our case the now known common problem in our Volvos. $2,500 compared to the $10,000 quote received from Volvo....

+1 to what AMB wrote. Find an independent Land Rover mechanic who has successfully rebuilt at least one diff, and don’t look back. They will have the special tool needed. Parts are 200 to 300 bucks (for all of the bearings and seals), the rest is shop time.
