Default Chain or Belt?

Is the 2011 XC 70 3.2 a timing belt or timing chain motor?

Thanks very much,

Lynn B.

The Volvo 3.2L inline 6-cyl has a timing chain and not a timing belt. One way to confirm this by observation is that it has no plastic timing belt compartment on the front of the engine. The front of the engine is the end away from the transmission, the right side of the engine compartment as seen from inside the passenger compartment. Also Google volvo short inline six or si6 engine and read the Wikipedia entry.

Picture shows timing chain on rear of engine. This is a cutaway drawing, the chain is not visible from outside the engine. The gearing is not clear, that is, it is not clear how the timing chain is driven by crankshaft, but of course it is somehow. The rubber belt shown is the accessories belt, and it is visible when looking into the engine compartment. The accessories belt drives the a/c, power steering, and I think the water pump. The alternator is in an unusual location and is driven internally from the crankshaft or the timing chain.

All of these design features are to make the 6-cyl engine short enough to fit transversely in the engine compartment. The back of the engine is on the right viewing the picture, that is, the transmission would be to the right. The picture shows the engine as you would see it from outside and in front of the vehicle looking into the engine compartment

JamesG, thank you for a great answer. I didn't think of looking in WikiP for info. And thanks for the illustration.

The guy at the dealership said he *thought* it was a chain motor. I've heard stuff from dealers before, so I thought I'd better nail it down.

I'm changing the belt in my wife's old Accord (2002 V6, 180,000+ miles) again right now, so you can see my concern.

Thanks again for a great answer! I appreciate it.

Default 2008 xc 70 3.2L Timing Chain

Related to the previous post. I have a 2008 XC 70 3.2L. My local dealer faxed me over a Volvo Maintenance schedule showing at 120k I need the timing belt and fuel filter replaced. I didn't give a VIN, maybe they made a mistake?

Based on the post, I have a timing chain and chain's are not replaced...correct? Fuel filter? Advice on a reliable source to view a maintenance schedule?

The 08 has a chain and no fuel filter. Maintenance schedule is in the owner's manual
