Front Crank Seal or Oil Pump Gasket/ O-Ring
Hi
Just curious if anyone ever had these leak oil? I have a 2006 XC70 with 175K miles. I've owned it just over 3 years so, full history is somewhat unknown. Will admit, leak started right after we did a Liqui Moly Motor Flush. In hindsight, probably not the best of ideas.
Thanks
Bob

When the oil pump O-rings go there's a reduction/elimination of the pump's ability to draw oil from the sump.
Dirt plugged the leak in the aging front seal and added to the drying of the seal by shielding it from oil. Removal of said dirt exposed the leak and the dry seal to liquid oil.
If the PCV system was neglected there likely is higher crankcase pressure during operation. Do a "glove test" by stretching a latex glove over the oil filler neck of a running engine. The glove should draw in not inflate. The same excess pressure can be measured at the dipstick tube using a party balloon in the same manner.

Thanks. So it turns out the front crank seal is not so bad. Cam seals and RMS are bad either. But, it's clearly pushing oil out several other places. We serviced the PCV with ALL new parts and it pulls great vacuum at idle. However, I am now suspecting excessive blowby under boost which the stock PCV cannot handle. I am told the compression is only 120psi (should be closer to 180psi). My next step is to try venting the oil cap to the atmosphere or air filter box. I should also do a leak down test but, need to buy the tools.
It's shame because at 176K miles the car drives perfect in every other way - just leaks oil.
