Wrong Oil Pump -> Blown Front Crank Seal?
Hello Volvo aficionados!
My son is driving a 2003 V40 Station Wagon.
B4184S2 engine, serial no. 2916151 VIN YV1VW14K23F965349
We are challenged by the car blowing out the front crank seal, dumping all the oil in mere minutes. We changed the seal three times making sure it was seated properly - even tried to fix it with Loctite once… It has lasted one week at most.
Assuming high pressure in crank case we cleaned out ports and breather hoses and put in a new PCV/Oil Separator unit. One week - back to square one in the yard; aux belt, balancer, timing belt, crank gear off…
A friend of my son - apprentice mechanic - put in a new oil pump two months ago.
Bought it new from a parts dealer who claimed it was the right one.
Checking the details it is an SHW Duocentric pump Ref. 30650144. According to skandix.de this seems to fit bigger Volvos like V60, V70, S80, XC70 and more, but NOT a pre-2004 V40. For this skandix.de specifies Ref. 9458425.
Mounting holes, ports, gasket and o-ring are identical, but could a pump meant for bigger engines (higher pressure/flow rate) cause the crank seal to blow??
Or should we look elsewhere/dump the car

I did a quick check and see that 9458425 is the correct part number for the 4 cyl engines used in the Gen 1 S40/V40s. Sounds like that's the cause for the seals not staying home. I suppose you can measure the oil pressure to see if its too high - just not sure if the incorrect part is pushing the seal out with too much pressure or if its just not allowing the seal to seat properly...
