Default Winter/Wet driving mode

This is my first posting, I fell into a very nice 02 v70 last Dec for short $. As with all good deals there is always a catch and in my case it was the hard shifting trany problem that seems a common one on this forum. Thanks to all the info derived form this forum, some hands on and a bit of luck I managed to get through that issue. I am an old Chevy/Ford guy but having driven the Volvo for the last couple of months I am impressed, suffice it to say I don't miss my Chevy.

Anyway: All of that having been said I have a question as to what is the function of "Winter/Wet driving mode". The manual states that it is for starting off on slippery roads.
What exactly changes when in that mode? I live in New England and we have been getting a lot "slippery roads" this winter, The car handles the snow great but to tell you the truth I notice no difference with or without the mode engaged. I am curious as to if it is even working.

Thank you

It just starts out in a higher gear. I think it starts in 3rd but don't quote me on that.

OK that makes sence, would explain why it dosn't feel much diferant, it would reduce the tendency of the tires to break loose.

Thank you
