If your early 960 misfires or skips at low rpm when driving at a steady speed or a very slight load at low rpms - replace the spark plugs. Had to solve that problem on multiple early 960's years ago - I always only used the factory plugs - from Volvo

For your original question - the intake air temp sensor for the fuel injection is built into the Air mass meter. I would not expect it to create a random misfire - from a lean or incorrect mixture - and your self diagnostic should store codes if so.

thanks hoonk for answering, i changed plugs and it was time for change but it did not make any change in the way it has been running, it is worst cruising at 40 ad 50 mph jumps and jerks but if i step down on it it clears and it is lacking power and in my experience as a mechanic i say this engine timing is firing retarded. the reason i asked about the air temp sensor is it showed up in diagnostic codes and there is a sensor on the front of the lower intake about the same level as the knock sensor and if that is not an air sensor can you tell me what it is. thanks again finding information on this car has been difficult and i have found information that was completely wrong, i pulled the head and put it back needed 9heeadgasket and i bent valves twice because chilton did not know how time it
