I have a 2006 XC70. I am attempting to replace the head unit with an aftermarket unit from Crutchfield. The DIN plug that I removed from the factory unit has eight pins. The harness that Crutchfield sent me has a six pin female plug. The tech at Crutchfield says that there is another six pin plug somewhere behind the dash. I am unable to find it, has anyone been in this same situation????
From memory some Volvo head units have two DIN connectors on them. 1 for the CD changer and the other for an external amp. Are you trying to connect your existing external amp? Because only a few cars have them.
XC70 cd changer wiring should be in the left rear corner of the car - you could find that (probably unused) wiring back in that corner and see if it matches what you disconnected.

So when I removed the head unit I only had to remove one DIN plug with 8 pins. The head unit does have both sockets, one 8 pin and one 6 pin. To answer your question, yes I am trying to connect to the external amp. Crutchfield says that there should be a 6 pin DIN plug under the dash. Another question is if the radio worked fine using the 8 pin plug , then why would there be a 6 pin plug?
The external amp - if equipped, is mounted under the passenger seat and readily visible. The cd changer DIN was plugged on the head unit but not plugged into anything in the back of the car. The speakers if no external amp is installed are powered by the old head unit. Here's a wiring diagram - if you have all those speaker wire connected to the Head unit on the B plug- you don't have an external amp. If you have an amp the B plug/harness is pulled down the side of the console and plugged into the amp harness.
Thanks to all who posted advice. I discovered that I do not have an amp under the passenger seat. My head unit has the amp built in. After talking to Crutchfield tech I was able to splice the speaker wires on the Crutchfield harness and the new unit worked. I'm still not sure what the 8 pin DIN plug does but it does not matter now since my new unit works.
