Conventional Oil Vs. Synthetic Oil

Conventional Oil Vs. Synthetic Oil
I just got my '01 S40 with a little over 97K. Talking to the previous owner, he said that during the manufaturer warranty period he would take it to the dealership to get the oil changed and he used the synthetic oil. After the warranty expiredhe started taking it to regular oil changing places and using conventional oil.
I'm going to get the 1st oil change under my ownership but i'm unsure as to which type of oil use. I'm affraid that if I go back to synthetic i could damage the engine.
If I use synthtetic, should I extend the milage? which synthetic should I use? or which conventional should I use?
Thank you,

RE: Conventional Oil Vs. Synthetic Oil
There are many posts here and over the web about this subject. This is a real heated issue many times. It will be a matter of personal preference on type and mileage. You can extend the mileage if you choose with synthetic, I do not, but again. My preference. Read through the other posts on oils and decide what is best for you.

RE: Conventional Oil Vs. Synthetic Oil
I would like to alter my answer somewhat. It dawned on me after I posted. If this is a turbo I most definitely say synthetic. Without a doubt. Now, my opinion is, if I am spending the extra dough for synthetic, I still change it at recommended intervals to improve the affectiveness. Again, just my opinion. Many say I am wasting my money, but if Volvo says 7,500 miles with conventional, then synthetic is better and sticking to original intervals is even better.
