Default 2002 S60 A/C stops working

HI everyone, it's been a while since I logged on. I had been having pretty good luck but that seems to have changed with the weather. My daughters S60 has an A/C problem that is intermittent. I have read alot of other threads and I am not sure if my problem is the same. The air works fine if you are on a road trip and you don't use the recirc switch, but if you have the recirc on it seems to freeze up. If you are in stop and go traffic it will quit working whether you have the recirc switch on or not. Some times if you turn the car off and then restart it, it starts back working, but not always. A couple of times when I was on the interstate I turned the A/C off for a couple of minutes and it started working again, without shutting off the engine. Anybody had this same problem ? I would appreciate any help with this heated situation.

Sounds like a clutch on the compressor going out and maybe a sensor on the evaporator. If the a/c is on, and it starts blowing warm, if you could look at the front of the a/c compressor and see if it is turning, if not, try taking a long screwdriver and tapping it.

Thanks, SVTfocus03. I will try that this afternoon. If it's not turning and it starts turning when I tap it, does that point to the compressor?

Well, the clutch. People like to reshim it, replace the clutch, or some like to replace the whole thing depending on mileage.

Sorry, it took so long for me to reply. The Volvo wasn't making it home in the heat of the day so I couldn't get it to stop working. I tried it today and after running it for about thirty minuets it quit working. I tapped on the compressor and it started working again.

Thanks,
