That is a pretty poor design anyway. Any way you look at it you don't get cold air even if it was sealed.
That is what I get from looking at the pic.
There is no fresh air coming from the front of the car. There is no tube going into the box.
Unless I can't see if from the pic.

Buy a BMC CDA from VPTuning, way more exspensive then an EST intake, but enclosed.

Not trying to start trouble but everone keps calling it an intake but it is really a Cold Air kit.
An intake is what bolts to the engine with the throttle body on it.

Ok well, that is all fine and well. I am just going by what the company and mostly everyone else calls it.

hrm, would it help, if you had a scoop or airduct on the hood? its somewhat of a permanent mod, but would that drastically inhance the airflow? have it offset to the driver side of the hood, over the filter

maybe something like

http://www.versusmotorsport.com/main...t&cid=0&page=6

or

http://ng.shop.com/op/~ABS_PLASTIC_H...-prod-24822787

would just have to find one small enough to fit on the hood between the contour lines, or if you know somebody thats decent with fiberglass / body work, can probly trim it just right to fit the contours of the hood. been lookin on the web for some sort of image of a car with off-center scoopage, but its actually more difficult to find than i expected.

similiar to this, only the other side (since its opposite side setup), with a scoop over it

Well to be honest our cars can only take in so much air. So doing that would only provide a quicker way for colder air to get to the filter to be sucked in. Plus IMO it would look horrible on these awsome cars.

Are you joking? I hope you are. That S70 is just ugly.

I didn't say I wanted the car to look like that just a hood similiar to that one.
Kind of like the one on my stang. A 2 1/2 inch Cowl hood.

I don't think it would look good on the Volvo. Looks good on Stangs and trucks. And old muscle cars.

Not me I kind of like the look of the cowl hood on alot of cars.

It would also depend on the color of the car.

Well to be honest our cars can only take in so much air. So doing that would only provide a quicker way for colder air to get to the filter to be sucked in.

exactly! it wouldnt be a 'ram-air' type induction, but it would definately wipe out the warm air getting to the filter itself - the incoming air would be circulating around the filter, instead drawing air from the engine bay. i really dont think you can make the area around the filter 'airtight'. the air still has to come from somewhere. unless you have some sort of air flowing to the cone, it would create a vacuum, and the car wouldnt run =/

the idea of running tubing to the bumper is a bad one, not only the water possibility, but even rocks / pebbles / (if you live in an area like mine) Salt and Dust also a factor. going down the highway, behind a semi + trailer, they throw rocks hard enough to crack windshields. theres no doubt it can chuck one thru a preliminary screen or filter, then come towards the cone, and beat it all to hell. i guess if you dont do much highway miles, wouldnt be much of a worry, but theres always loose gravel roads, dirt roads, asphault in the summer, etc. not to mention how ugly the tubing looks if theres not much time spent on routing.

im not sure how the cowel would look, never seen it on a volvo. imo, as long as its not rediculously too large for the car itself, it should look pretty nice, and definatley stand out. the offcenter scoop, ive only seen on smaller euro cars, like peugeot, renault, etc.

I take it then that there is no hole or vent in the inner fender of an S70, so unless u run a pipe theres no sense in sealing it off.

Running the intake pipe from the grille isnt a bad idea, Volvo does it in the R. But like anything, if not done right..... A scoop on the hood would allow more water in the intake if not done right, than a taking it from the grille.
