Default AC question

1998 Volvo S90

My AC blows good and cold for about 5 minutes, then the compressor kicks off and will not come back on until the car is off for a good amount of time.

I tried getting the compressor to kick back on via info in this fourm about pushing on the clutch with a broom handle while it is running.

I could not get it to kick on. I checked pressure with a cheap walmart refill gage and it is in the good range.

I can feel the pipe at the expansion valve and it is hot on one side and very cold on the other while the compressor is running. It is cold all the way to the firewall and then it goes into the evaporator and comes out into the accumaltor where it is not cold at all, not even a little.

I am thinking there may be a blockage in the evaporator??? Causing the pressure to build up to high and kick the compressor off???

Is there any way to test this theory?

What can I do besides replace the evaporator?

What is my next Step? If I have to replace the evap. are there any step by step instructions?

Thanks
-Ian

Sorry been away for a few days.

When it stops working do you still have power at the compressor green wire?
