C30 T5 manual transmission question.

C30 T5 manual transmission question.
Hi All--
I have a 2008 C30 T5 manual transmission. I bought 'Flaarrg' new and because of my very long daily commute, I have a lot of miles on him (153,000+). At 69,000 miles I had to have the transmission replaced because of a manufacturing flaw (it was under warranty). Now there us something wrong with the transmission--literally it started yesterday and the day before all was good. I smell the fluid burning when I idle and it makes a loud humming-meets-revving noise in fourth gear although it gains speed fine. It's especially loud going uphill and since I live in the mountains and work in the flats, that's not a good thing. Now my question: the dealer told me if anything goes wrong with the transmission they will have to replace it not repair it. Is that true? Or because that is what they only seem to do, replace not repair. If it's something like the bearings or the seals, can a transmission shop repair it ? I ask because I really can't afford the $5,000 to replace the manual transmission which is what Volvo estimates and it's always more than what the estimate.
Thanks in Advance,

the reason they siad they would replace it because volvo does not have a rebuild kit at all.. ive heard of independents rebuilding the transmissions but i wouldnt personally recommend it but thats just personal opinion. if it is the transmission and you do not have the money to replace it, then by all means get it rebuilt.

DAMIEN: thank you for your response. The car has had to have a lot of work done lately, especially with the suspension and exhaust systems so if rebuild is an option I would have to take that at least until I have the money for a new one.
JASON: Thank you as well. Unfortunately it's been about two and a half years. What I don't understand is that the dealership had the car last month for a week and said they checked out everything including the transmission and said it was in excellent working order. Then again, before I took it in there wasn't an oil leak and now a month later it's down a quart of oil.

have you gotten everything and i mean everything done at a volvo dealership? ive seen where volvo goodwills major repairs because of the loyalty of the customer. if you have, you can try calling vcna and seeing what they can do. its a long shot but it may be possible because it isnt that old.
