Can brake creaking be caused by cold temperature?
My XC70 started to make brake creaking recently.
I have reason to suspect that it's the cold temperature that is causing the creaking, because it happens only during the first few minutes of driving and goes away once the car is warmed up.
Can brake creaking be caused by cold temperature? (I live in Boston.)
Or is it still the usual suspect (i.e., worn brake lining) that is causing the creaking?

Creaking like an old rocking chair on a wooden floor?

Like a door hinge that badly wants grease or WD 40.
Maybe e-brake shoes sticking to the rotors.
Try this and it might lead to weather it is the e-brake shoes or not. Pull the e-brake handle up like one or 2 slicks like just enough to make it rub and see if it stops.

Wow...I couldn't have come and read this at a better time..I replaced the rotors and brake pads on the rear axle a few weeks ago..and ever since..everytime I pushed on the brakes..I get a very loud Squeek...then when I let up on the brake..the same thing would happen..and even sometimes when I really put some pressure on the brakes it would really squeal..for a short time.
Then the other nite I had to go and get something and forgot something at home..so I put the brakes on as usual and put into reverse down the street back to my house kinda fast..and hit the brakes kinda hard and long..that seemed to help quite a bit.
Also, just for the heck of it..I pulled the pads on the rear brakes..and looked at them..and the wear on them was only about halfway down the pad..like maybe the calipur piston wasn't hitting the pad evenly..or maybe sticking.
I'm also going to try your idea Tech..and see if that will correct my problem too.
Right now while I am driving down the street and come up to a light...my brakes probably sounds like I don't have any...LOL
Nice car like this and it sounds like an Old Jalopy....

First, try what Tech has suggested.
Metals contract under cold temp and clearance is reduced. However, I would also visually inspect the pads/rotors. In damp weather, the rotors can rust in a matter of hours and when you first hit the brake pedal you would hear screech/groan.
When I hear screech, I usually spray clean the brakes with a can of brake cleaner and re-apply silicone/molybdenum-based brake grease.
I miss Boston & neighbouring towns
