Default Certified Pre Owned Warranty

Hi all,
My son and I have been longtime Volvo owners. My wife and I are thinking of getting a 2017 Certified Pre Owned XC60 from our local dealer. We are also contemplating purchasing the Volvo 10 year, 999,999 mile warranty offered as we tend to keep our cars forever. I asked the dealer about specifics with the warranty and she said that we would need to contact the warranty company themselves for details as it is a service offered through Volvo. We had experience terrible issues with a GM extended warranty so I am leery of this one.
Question I have are as far as maintenance, can you do this your self such as oil changes, filter changes etc.. or must this be done at the dealership? How good our these warranties. Are there issues when items do fail even if maintained properly? As mentioned we had an extended warranty with a GM vehicle, had a PCV valve stick (they said it was frozen in cold weather) that never threw a code and the engine blew a rear main seal and ruined the engine and they are claiming is it not covered.
Thanks so much.

Personally I am a big fan of going CPO vs new. As to the terms of the CPO warranty, you can find the description on Volvo's web site (just google for it). This is not the same as the extended warranty which dealers may sell, which is done via a third party, so just make sure you know what you are getting. My understanding is Volvo's CPO is 5 years/unlimited miles with an option to extend to 10 years. Volvo's service plan states that they "recommend dealer service with genuine volvo parts" but doesn't say having a local tech do the work voids the warranty. That said, if a dealer isn't convenient or you prefer your own, keep all receipts/documentation to support a claim. Also note that the warranty does have exclusions so make sure you read what they are.

As to maintenance, start by going to the Volvo web site and download the maintenance schedule. You'll see there's really not a lot of routine maintenance required any more. Synthetic oils have upped the change intervals and things like plugs last for 60K miles. The big value add that the dealers provide are 1) they keep all records for you 2) they inspect the car for potential wear items 3) they have fast access to genuine Volvo parts and factory tech assistance 4) they can do all the software scans/updates, recalls, service bulletin work. OK so you pay a 20% premium, but if you still want to do your own oil changes, fluids, filters local, just keep records. Yes, all cars will have parts fail regardless of how dilligent your maintenance was.

Final thought - if you compare Volvo's CPO warranty vs others, its a great deal. I bought a CPO VW CC and got 2 years / 24K additional miles. That's about half of what Volvo offers out of the box... Some light reading
