Engine numbers are strange
I recently purchased a 2006 XC 70 with 114,000 miles I dont have service records. I am proactively changing the timing belt and water pump . In ordering a timing belt site I found the following: for 2006 Volvo XC 70 engine number 3188688, the Aisin timing belt kit is AIS TKV001; for engine number 3188689, the timing belt set is AIS TKV003. Howver, when I checked my engine number, the engine number on the timing belt cover is 3743399. This does not match either.

Thanks. I found that place on the engine but cant even get anything in there to clean off corrosion. There is also a manifold cover not shown in the pic. Is there a way to look up engine number by VIN?
VIN will tell you the engine family ie the B4204T etc by mapping the 6/7 digits in the VIN. The VIN will also tell you the chassis serial number which is usually good enough to determine part number breaks. A dealer may be able to research the build information from the VIN if you really need the engine's serial number
