Question Extended Warranty beyond 100,000 miles

I have a 2016 Inscription S60 that I bought off lease in 2018 with ~30,000 miles. It wasn't certified, but was eligible for the 9 year or 100,000 Platinum Protection which I purchased. I love the car, and I've had only minor issues...though a couple were costly (Firebox, etc.), which were covered. I have about 94,000 miles, and I'll hit 100K this year. Is there any option to extend a Volvo warranty, or is there a recommended third-party option out in the U.S. marketplace? Thanks!

When I bought my car I was able to do a 10 year, unlimited mile warranty, bumper to bumper for about $3000. Was that not offered to you when you bought the car? Might not be worth that price at this point since the 10 years is from the original purchase, so you would only be good until 2026. You can always see what the dealer offers. I never used a 3rd party warranty, but I am pretty young and do not have a lot of experience with car warranties and new(er) car purchases.

I don't know the specific answer to your question. However, one thing that is true is that, the more the car ages and the miles accumulate, the higher the charge for an extended repair contract. At this point, I seriously doubt that an extended repair contract, even if you could purchase it, would be economically appropriate. If I were you, I set aside $5K (or so) for potential future major repair needs, instead of buying additional insurance. An extended repair contract, at your car's age/mileage, will surely cost thousands, and may not necessarily provide the coverage youyou 'll want/need (read the fine print from whatever contract you intend to sign and back away if the writing isn't clear and have questions).

With this said, the following is a link I found for coverage for cars over 100k miles. Personally, I wouldn't buy an extended plan, at your mileage or from these or other companies, but that's not the answer to the question you posed. Good luck.

+1. extended warranties are just an insurance policy where the pricing is based on actuarial tables that predict the average cost of repair for any given model plus the mark up. So you are betting that your cost of repair will be higher than average plus mark up. Plus you need to read the fine print as to who does the work and what parts will be provided (aftermarket or genuine Volvo?). While this saves you on a big ticket item like a VW CC long block replacement at 49K miles for $9800 (I did have a CPO extended for that car so I won the bet), once you get at 100K miles you are seeing more normal wear and tear issue than design/manufacturing defects. As maggs suggest, if you keep a rainy day fund, you are hedging the bet that you will only have typical repairs leaving only the risk of a major issue like high oil consumption seen on select Volvo engines/years. I'd probably trade in a car if it started to show signs of abnormal oil consumption since the repair for that is typically new pistons/rings etc.
