I have been offered to buy a 1998 wtih 240,000 miles 5 cyl Turbo at around $2000...?? (S70 ? )

Owner says car has a "new" engine that was rebuilt from a nother like model...

Any advise before I buy it ??

At that price I would buy it.

 

Have a trusted mechanic check it out and if everything is OK then jump on it. You may want to pay for a carfax if you are really serious about purchasing it.

 

speaking of carfax - i have a brief question regarding those - how accurate are they and the score they provide? i was trying t get a loan on a car and my credit union was too skeptical to give me a load because of the price i got the vehicle for, but the carfax checked out great...

 

1. Have a trusted mech look at it.

2. Get a CARFAX report.

3. Make sure they have all documentation of everything ever done to the vehicle. Or at least 90%-95% of all the documentation. I would strive for full documentation, 100%.

 

Well if it was reported to an agency then it will probably show up on carfax. Any damage, repair, etc. that was never reported to an insurance agency or a lein holder etc. probably wouldn't show up on a car fax, because there would be no record of it happening. So even though they may give you a good amount of information they are not infallible.

 

It also gets reports from police departments.
Years after I got my Mustang I carfaxed it and it showed and accident.(Minor rearend no damage)
And it showed all Dealers serviding and warranty info.

 

well, i ran a carfax on the 99 v70 i purchased and there weren't any surprises - so that's good. I ran an autocheck prior to purchase. It didn't show the maintenance other than one done at 35k and 70k though...
