Default Trans does not match VIN! What do I have? What do I do? Anything?

Just bought a 2005 S60. The VIN YV1RS 612252 4... decodes as having a manual transmission, but S60 has an automatic!

The car looks and run almost like *new*.

In the short term, it needs a little transmission fluid. I assume that there is a plate with the transmission model so I can determine what fluid to put into it. Can anyone tell me where to find it?

In the long term, I am not sure what to do, or if I care. I would appreciate any and all reactions or comments. I will need to maintain it, I hope for a very long time.

Thanks.

You need to use an ATF meeting JWS 3309 specifications.

Volvo Application Guide

See link attached for applications. (They are the Aisin people - manuf of the transmissions.)

You can use Mobil 3309, Mobil.1 3309 synthetic or Toyota T-1V also which meet 3309 specs.

YV1RS612252463249

I would strongly like to see a transmission name plate or something like that with a model number on the transmission. Can anyone tell me where to find this? I don't want to leave this to an assumption that S60's use this... Perhaps someone put this in after it left the factory, and who knows what they may have put in!

For that matter, perhaps I should be wondering about the engine also?

Thanks for your help.

It had an automatic from the factory, serial number 4LV563571. This is on the tag on top of the trans.

Engine should be a B5244S, number 3615674. This is on the sticker on the timing cover.

I am certainly glad to hear this, but where did you get this information? (I will check these tonight) And why do the VIN decoders (several of them) tell me that it is a manual?

Next question is, can you confirm that for this transmission that as Difflock said "You can use Mobil 3309, Mobil.1 3309 synthetic or Toyota T-1V also which meet 3309 specs." is correct?

Thank you, very much.

I don't know how the VIN decoders work, but there is no trans code in the VIN like there is an engine code (61 for yours). I am a tech so I plugged the VIN into our VIN inquiry system and also into VIDA (what we use to read codes and program modules) and between those two, I can see all the specs of the car.

Yes, you need to use fluid compatible with JWS 3309 specification.

If I find a chart providing the information to decode the VIN manually, I find that position 9 is a check digit in the US, but specifies the gearbox elsewhere. If decoded as a gearbox, it indicates an "M46 Manual". So apparently all of the online VIN decoders that I tried (And I tried several) decoded according to the non-US interpretation.

Thank you very much for your help.

One more clarification. Given that it meets 3309 specifications, do you have any information that would suggest whether the "regular" or "synthetic" would be preferable? I would just as soon get the one that might best, and as I am sure you have seen, there are alot of opinions.
Thanks.

I work at a dealer so when we fill them, there is one option. I couldn't say if one is better than another.
