transmission fluid
OK. Another question. My 850 has 113,400 miles on it, and it runs great. I thought I might just change the tranny fluid and filter due to the mileage. I don't know if the previous owner had it changed. When I called my local delaer, they said they would have to look at the tag on the tranny to see what kind of fluid is in it. Then hook up the machine to flush it out. And it would cost between $200 - $900
Sounds awful high to me. Anyone have any thoughts?

Search this forum or volvospeed.com and find out how to do it yourself. I have never changed or flushed the fluid in mine, but I hear it is a piece of cake. I don't believe they have filters. There is a drain plug to drain and fill, but flushing is different. You take a hose off the radiator and run the fluid out a couple quarts at a time until it runs out and looks like what is going in. I think it takes about 12 quarts to flush properly.

What is interesting is that a dealer would quote a price up to $900.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can not imagine what that would encompass. I believe the Volvo dealer charged me around $125.00 this early spring for a flush...................
REG - Thanks for that. I can't figure for the life of me what would cost $900! He said by looking at the tag on the tranny, would tell them what fluid is in it. Isn't fluid, fluid? If he said $125, I would have made an appointment.
I believe...............won't swear by it..................that the fluid the dealer put in was General Motors. The dealer sells G.M. , Volvo, GMC, and Mazda. You are right...................fluid is fluid and there are but a few used and none of them are exotic. Type A, Type F, and "the new stuff"................which cost me appx. $125.00 for a flush. In fact, it is so inexpensive for this service, I do it every 20,000 miles on all my autos! If you are strapped for cash, it is as Jim says...............a do-it-yourself-project.
I believe the 850 is just ATF.The newer cars use 2 different fluids depending on the trans. The 4-speed uses one and the 3-speed uses another fluid.
EDIT: My cheater book says dextron III/ mercon fluid.Which is the normal ATF.
